There are 4 types of narcissist, its rising as of 2008 in universities, (I also went to Uni - eventually) its that ones you can't spot from a mile away that haunt dreams. They all send people to therapy.
Really enjoyed this, Courtenay. I appreciate both of them as poets, but "Sylvia’s madness did not exist in a bell jar. Everything she did, she did for Ted" – yes!
Your own poetry is terrific. Glad your Plath sestina poem was accepted.
I’m not sure what to say about this - I just absolutely loved it and have now reread it three times. The language is so beautiful and though I know only a little about Plath and Hughes (I’ve read The Bell Jar, and that’s about it), this is so illuminating. I love posts like this - I'm not the so-called target audience, most likely, but I find it so rewarding and educational.
Thank you so much! Also, the story of Plath and Hughes is quite interesting, and a point of contention among many; especially considering their remaining child is still alive.
Now that’s a tricky one! Personally, I really enjoy it! However, it is completely inaccurate due to the lack of information at the time. Plus, her children blocked any of her poetry being used in full. Ted and Sylvia had two children, but Nicholas committed suicide in 2009. Ted had another child from his affair with Assia Wevill, but she killed herself and their child in the same manner as Plath did in 1969.
I would recommend reading Red Comet by Heather Clarke!
My phone is too archaic to run Substack app. Damn it! I cannot message. I’ll try on desktop tomorrow. I’m doing a thing but I’d like to invite you to it.
Congrats on getting your submission accepted.

Thank you so much, Wendy! Yes, that was the quickest acceptance I’ve had in a long while! Submissions are painfully slow these days!

How’s the Sylvia film with Gwyneth Paltrow? Worth watching?
I didn’t know about their child. I know their story from snippets here and there, in book reviews, but I have yet to take a deeper dive.
