I haven’t watched much South Park since the late 90’s or whenever it first came out but I can see a lot of fart sniffing going on there.

i fart quite frequently (bad diet, no exercise) so the fart sniffers might be a side effect

Thank you for this refreshing essay! I spend most of my time on Booktok and therefore saw a lot of these videos you mentioned. When I started to read this “essay” I was firmly holding on to my belief that pretentiousness is important to fight “anti-intellectualism”. Ha! Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I know I need to work on critical thinking… but we’re getting there. :)

Also: Is this an essay? I’m not too sure.

I’m glad it’s of value to you! With regards to it being an essay, I’m not sure! It’s a kind of in-between!

I am a pretentious git. I hide my being a pretentious git. I have learned to smile and nod and to Google television shows to understand why people talk about them. I may someday buy a television and not be a compulsive lit geek. I share books I love via reviews and understand that not all readers are poetry-literate and admire those who read for pure escape. I read for frisson, typically.

I get a similar side-eye when people ask me what games I play or shows I watch and I tell them that I read and write 😆 More often than not, the conversation ends there or veers to another topic. But as you say, it doesn't have to!
